Has a New Year resolution left you needing to spruce up the family home a tad? Maybe you've just been inspired by a fantastic holiday where you fell in love with the local traditional rugs. Regardless of the reason for your rug buying expedition, here are a few points to consider.
When you start your mission, be it browsing a collection of modern rugs or traditional designs, first stop to consider the use you have in mind for the rug. Which room will the rug go in? Will it be covering a busy area entrance hall, where it may get muddy? Or will it be a show piece in the middle of the living room floor?
If the rug will see heavy traffic, it is perhaps not wise to lay an exquisite Turkish Kilim in your entrance hallway. If people will be passing through, rather than stopping to admire the rug, simple synthetic fibres will be hard wearing and durable, without being too hard on the wallet.
If you are looking for a stand out feature, however, be prepared to splash the cash a bit when looking for that special rug. It is worth bearing in mind that what may initially appear to be an expensive item can transform a room for much less than the cost (and time) required to redecorate ? and the easy mobility of the rug makes it a much more flexible solution to sprucing up a room.
If you are going the traditional, imported route for that centrepiece rug, but are worried about wear and tear, bear in mind that rugs like Kilims and Dhurries are often hung on walls rather than lain ojn the floor, and so can enhance a room without risking wear and tear damage.
If the function you are looking to fulfil is sheer comfort, an investment in a more expensive material can pay dividends. Rather than focusing your budget on an intricate design, it can be well worth investing in a deep pile pure wool rug to keep your feet cosy on cold winter mornings.
Other furs and skins are an alternative option for an exotic floor covering, but be advised that sheep skin rugs and the like are not as resistant to accidental spillage and other damage as synthetic fibres.
Lastly, don't limit yourself to only local outlets when looking for your new rug as there are a wealth of online providers like Modern Rugs who have good websites with plenty of pictures to inspire your search and start you off on your hunt for the perfect rug!
